"Goodbye, Tiffie."
Jesse walked out and stopped with one foot on the top
step. He whirled around and burst back through her door to
find her still standing there. Her eyes grew wide, but he didn't
slow or even hesitate. Strode up to her, yanked her into his
arms, and slanted his mouth over hers.
This was no gentle kiss. It dominated. His tongue surged
through, reacquainting itself with the recesses of her mouth.
He was bombarded by her addictive taste. It reawakened
parts of him others couldn't even begin to touch.
He couldn't get enough. His hands pressed her tight to
him, and he flexed his hips, ensuring she felt his hard cock.
Tiffie held stiff for a short time then she released a whimper
and sank into him, her hips matching his thrusts. Desire
slammed him so hard his knees buckled slightly and his shaft
ached.
With a low growl, he tore away from her, ignored the
passion-glazed eyes and kiss swollen lips, and whipped
around, leaving the house without a word. The rain soaked

him in seconds, but it didn't cool him down any. Wet, he slid
behind the wheel of his truck and soon was on his way back
home.
The sight of her large eyes staring up at him with nostalgia
and hunger in them, darkened by her passion, remained with
him. Haunting him. Tormenting him. Damn it! He drummed
his fingers on the steering wheel as he sat at a red light. The
rain hadn't let up, and his wipers could barely keep up even
though they were on high.
"Why did she come back? Did she really think we wouldn't
run into each other?"
It wasn't like this was a small town, but word did tend to
get around and surely she had to know that some cop would
be bound to see her at the hospital. Then again maybe she
had someone in her life, and it wasn't a concern for her.
He ground his jaw at that thought. No way. There'd been
no sign of a male in her house living with her, and she'd not
had a ring on her hand. You didn't give her a ring, his brain
reminded him.
The blaring of a horn behind him snapped his attention
back to the road and the green light. Shifting into gear, he
continued on his way. He was tense and cranky when he
finally made it back to his apartment. Once inside he stripped
and took a long hot shower where he gave in and brought
himself to release while picturing Tiffie in there with him.
Dressed in a pair of jeans and back in his kitchen, he
stared in the freezer before pulling out a microwave meal. He
tossed it in and set the time before grabbing a beer from the
fridge. Two swigs in and the doorbell rang.

Drink in hand, Jesse went to the door and opened it.
Robert Cappa, a fellow officer, stood there. They were in the
same graduating class and had become really good friends.
"Rob, what's up?" he asked, stepping back to allow him in.
"Hey man, sorry to bother you." Rob took off his coat and
hung it up. "Weather's a bitch out there tonight."
"Yeah it is. Can I get you a beer?"
"Please."
Seated in the living room, Jesse repeated his first
question. Rob looked a bit out of sorts. His fingers constantly
tapped against his thighs. The man could hardly sit still, and
he avoided eye contact.
"I thought I should come tell you this. Kathy saw Tiffie a
few days back. I guess she is working at Chambers
Memorial."
"I know. I saw her today. She was at the precinct taking
on the captain." He took another drink. "Thanks for the
warning though. When did you and Kathy start talking again?"
Rob ran a hand over his shaved black head. "We haven't
really. We were both invited to this thing, and she mentioned
it."
"Did Kathy say if she was staying?"
He knew that Tiffie and Kathy had been good friends.
They'd done many double dates with Rob and Kathy before
she'd left. So there was a chance Kathy would know.
Unfortunately Rob shook his head.
"I don't know if they even spoke. She just said she saw
her at the hospital. If you saw her, though, how are you
doing? I know it can't be easy."

He grunted. "It was fine."
Rob nodded and finished his beer. They talked about
sports and other things, never once getting back on the
subject of Tiffany Carver. It didn't matter. Jesse knew if he
wanted to talk about it, Rob was there. He'd been one of the
few to know just how deeply Tiffie's leaving had hurt him.
"I have to get going, but I wanted to just give you the
heads up."
Jesse got to his feet and took both empty bottles back to
the recycling bin in the kitchen. "Thanks, man."
"You got it. Okay, I'm outta here. I'll catch you later." Rob
grabbed his coat and slipped out the door.
Jesse locked it behind him and went to the microwave and
reheated his dinner. His dreams that night were full of Tiffie,
and he woke feeling very tired and cranky.
He worked out before work and after he'd showered and
dressed in his uniform he sat down for the morning briefing.
After getting assignments and information from the
previous shift's activities, the officers began to split off. His
captain caught his eye, and Jesse followed him into his office.
"Yes, sir?" he asked, thumbs hooked in his utility belt.
Captain Phillip Kipfer was a corpulent man with thinning
hair and eyes which seemed too small for his face. His skin
had lost its slight tan from being inside at his desk so much.
What was important was he was a fair man in Jesse's opinion.
Took care of his officers. A bit of a temper, too.
"I need you to get to Chambers and question the suspect
in Room 321." He opened his mouth to argue, but Kipfer

continued on. "No arguments. I put the case file on your
